Doug Downey
Impressionist Knife Painter
Doug, born in 1952, resides in Springdale, Newfoundland. He has traveled extensively and has lived in Europe and in various parts of Canada as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He has been a competitor in various sports throughout the years, which included soccer and badminton at the regional and national level and a 2nd Degree Black Belt in the Martial Arts.

Periodically throughout the years, Doug has shared his love of art through teaching. He has taught the Art Smarts program in the Newfoundland provincial school system as well as classes in the High School. He has taught at various locations in Calgary, Edmonton, and surrounding communities which included workshops. Doug, on occasions, conducts classes in his studio and on location outdoors (en plein air). His preference of course is en plein air.
En plein air, the sights, the sounds, and the smells, all provide the inspiration and mood for the rendering of a particular painting. Doug draws his inspiration from the Newfoundland landscape such as the rivers, ponds, waterfalls, rolling hills, little fishing communities and the coastline.

Artwork has been presented to a former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as to a Lieutenant Governor. Work has been commissioned and purchased by the Department of National Defense, various business corporations and institutions. Works have been purchased through the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Procurement.
He is currently represented in Lacombe, Alberta by The Gallery on Main (www.thegalleryonmain.com).
